Billie Holiday established herself as one of the most prominent jazz singers of her time, leaving a lasting mark on the Harlem Renaissance.

Though as an African American she face adversity all throughout her life despite her fame, she started performing at nightclubs and bars, eventually getting recognition from people of all races. She was heavily watched thought-out her career as a minority with such influence as herself was seen as highly dangerous. Despite this, Holiday wrote "Strange Fruit", a song illustrating the true horrors of the constant lynchings of African Americans. She knew of the consequences that would soon follow but knew as long as future generations would be singing her song, it would all be worth it.
